For families living in makeshift tents, nights are spent awake as water seeps through fabric walls and pools on the ground beneath them. Parents repeatedly check on their children, fearing that floodwater will reach where they are sleeping. With mattresses, blankets, and dry clothes in short supply, many are forced to sleep directly on cold, wet ground. More than 42,000 tents and makeshift shelters were damaged in mid-December alone, affecting nearly a quarter of a million people. Since the start of winter, several children have died from the cold, including two-month-old Arkan Firas Musleh. Others have been killed when weakened structures collapsed during storms. With limited access to shelter materials and basic supplies, displaced families say they are facing winter with little protection from the cold, the rain, or the wind, struggling to endure conditions that strip them of warmth and safety.
