This act of minor sacrilege, inconsequential on its own, starts to look like a pattern when you consider how Hegseth's boss and underlings alike treat religious sanctity in practice. It goes beyond Donald Trump's high-profile spat with Pope Leo XIV over the war on Iran, where he condemned the first-ever US leader of the Catholic Church as 'Weak on Crime' and 'Weak on Nuclear Weapons'. It goes beyond the president's habit of posting self-aggrandising AI-generated images of himself as the Pope or as Jesus himself. It goes beyond even the Pentagon's obscure invocation of the 14th-century 'Avignon papacy' to threaten the Vatican with total political subjugation. Underlying this tower of blasphemies is an unholy alliance with a gnocidal Isreli regime that systematically desecrates and destroys houses of worship across West Asia, Muslim and Christian alike -- even bombing a Jewish synagogue in Tehran. Against this transnational 'Epstein empire', it's no wonder that the Islamic Republic has marshalled the fervent loyalty of people of faith the world over.
