This labour (e.g. cooking, caring for children and the elderly) is almost always done by UNPAID women in households. 2) Women not only do care work at home, but also often in their paid jobs. In Australia, women are massively over-represented in the care industries: in healthcare, aged care, childcare and teaching. Often these jobs exploit the fact that women will work for more hours than they’re paid for and put up with unsafe working conditions. 3) Capitalism & imperialism make use of gendered oppression to push down the cost of labour in the Global South. It is peasant or working class women in the Global South who often have the worst jobs in mining, manufacturing, which allows all of us to consume the cheap commodities that we have. Without addressing the deep and insidious roots of women’s oppression, the roots that go all the way to the structure of how labour is organised in society, we will not be able to tackle the patriarchy.
