The US dropped more than 7.8 million tons of bombs on Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia—more than both sides used in World War II combined and the largest number of bombs ever dropped in a single armed conflict—and even then, they couldn’t defeat the Vietnamese communists. The day after the defeat at the Newport Bridge, the US began to flee Vietnam like rats, abandoning helicopters and desperately evacuating its mercenaries.
