Tamara Himani reports for MEE that Italy and Spain have moved to protect their citizens aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, the 50-boat convoy attempting to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Following repeated Israeli military strikes on the flotilla, Rome dispatched two naval ships, while Madrid sent one of its own the next day. Their deployment marks the strongest response yet from European governments after weeks of escalating attacks, including drone strikes and communications jamming. The UN and EU have both warned that no use of force against the convoy will be tolerated, but Italy and Spain are so far the only states to back their statements with direct military protection. The UK Foreign Office said the British government is not able to provide assistance at this time, in reponse to requests for support
