Middle East Eye spoke with US activist Hannah Smith on board the Global Sumud Flotilla about some of the ships having to turn back to port due to bad weather conditions on Monday. “Last night was a rough night. We had a much stronger storm than we anticipated and four of our smaller vessels did have to turn back for safety concerns,” says Smith, adding: “The flotilla is continuing. We won’t be intimidated by weather, we won’t be intimidated by threats.” Made up of several boats carrying humanitarian aid, the Global Sumud Flotilla set sail on Sunday, aiming to break Israel’s ongoing siege on Gaza that has pushed the Palestinian enclave into a deadly, man-made famine. Named after the Arabic word for “perseverance”, the Global Sumud Flotilla is the largest civilian aid convoy since Israel’s war on Gaza began in October 2023.
