“We want to say to the people of Gaza: hold on. We stand with you in our own way.” A new exhibition opening in Paris on Friday pays tribute to Gaza’s rich cultural heritage, showcasing archaeological artefacts from what was once “the culmination of the great caravan routes”. Much of this heritage has been damaged or destroyed by Israel’s ongoing onslaught. “If we were to excavate the modern city today, we would uncover more than eight successive layers of civilisations,” says Elodie Bouffard, the exhibition’s curator. The Palestinian Department of Antiquities was established in 1995 following the Oslo Accords and oversaw the first official archaeological digs, including the uncovering of remains from the ancient Greek port of Anthedon. These excavations came to a standstill after Israel imposed a blockade on Gaza in 2007.
