During a September 8, 2025, appearance on New York’s Power 105.1's “The Breakfast Club”, conservative commentator Ben Shapiro sat down with the hosts for an interview, and the conversation turned to a discussion that the ruling class would rather ignore: reparations for the descendants of enslaved Africans. Shapiro's refusal to support reparations aligns with the MAGA movement's stance against compensating victims of the European slave trade, which a recent UN resolution labelled as “the gravest crime against humanity.” His reasoning reflects colonial logic, denying accountability for past atrocities despite accumulated wealth gained from slavery and colonialism. One of the hosts, Charlamagne, highlighted that Jewish Holocaust survivors received reparations. Shapiro attempted to deflect by mentioning “fights” among Jews about accepting German reparations, a claim contradicted by historical consensus from Jewish organisations and Israel. On 25 March, the UNGA resolution on the European slave trade, led by Ghana, garnered 123 votes in favour, with only the US, Israel, and Argentina opposing it, while 52 countries, including the UK and many EU nations, abstained. The resolution emphasises the need to address historical wrongs affecting Africans and the diaspora, calling for reparatory justice through formal apologies, restitution, compensation, and rehabilitation. This vote is significant not only for acknowledging the crime of slavery but also for highlighting that reparations should benefit both the African nations from which millions were kidnapped by colonial powers and the diaspora communities suffering its lasting effects. In the US, the case for reparations is well-supported by scholars. Dr Claud Anderson highlights in “A Black History Reader” that the Freedman's Bank, established in 1865 for formerly enslaved people, failed due to white trustees misappropriating deposits, exemplifying broken promises. Economist William Darity estimates that compensation for slavery could be in the trillions, reflecting wealth taken from enslaved labour, land theft, and discrimination—debts the nation has yet to acknowledge.
