On Monday, students and alumni chained themselves to the gates of Columbia’s campus in New York, calling on their administration to protect them from the widespread crackdown by the Trump Administration on pro-Palestine activism. Mahmoud Khalil and Mohsen Mahdawi, both Green Card holders, were arrested by ICE immigration agents for their role in activism at Columbia and remain in detention as they fight against deportation. Others including Turkish international student Rumeysa Ozturk were detained without clear reason, but have been cited by the White House as examples of its fight against antisemitism. But others accuse the administration of using the campus protests as an excuse to pressure the country’s top universities into giving up their autonomy by withholding billions in federal grants. Harvard University is currently suing the US government after it was threatened with a funding freeze if it didn’t comply with a list of demands.
