On 6 June, the Barbican in London was transformed by SADA—meaning "echo" in Arabic—a powerful night celebrating Palestinian artistry, brought to life by Marsm and Shubbak. What made this event unique was the lineup itself: all the artists were from different parts of Palestine, each bringing their own unique sound and story. The line-up included Sama’ Abdulhad, the trailblazing DJ in the electronic music scene, renowned for introducing Palestinian techno to the world; DJ Ya Z An, who started his journey in Ramallah and draws on the city’s energy and underground scene to create what he calls 'fluffy techno'; Dana Salah, a singer-songwriter and soulful artist fusing Palestinian folklore and pop; Rola Azar, who revives Palestinian folk traditions in her music; and last but not least, DAM, the pioneering Palestinian hip hop group known for blending fierce Arabic rap with Middle Eastern rhythms to powerfully express Palestinian identity, resistance, and social issues through music since the late 1990s. Backstage, we had the chance to sit down with DAM, Dana Salah, and Rola Azar for honest conversations about the complexities of being a Palestinian artist today. They spoke about the challenges of developing and enjoying their craft while carrying the responsibility of representing their people, and the weight of creating under occupation. #SADA #PalestinianMusic #PalestinianArt #PalestinianArtists #ArabicMusic
