Abu Rub, released by Israel under a ceasefire agreement, was deported to Egypt, and barred from re-entering the territories. He was serving four life sentences. Despite the Fourth Geneva Convention prohibiting such forcible transfers, this isn't the first time Israel has used exile as a condition of release. In the January ceasefire agreement, 70 Palestinians on long or life sentences were moved to Egypt before moving on to third countries, in a tactic that observers say sidesteps accountability while maintaining political control.
