Middle East analyst Andreas Krieg tells MEE LIVE that support for Syria’s new government isn’t altruistic, but it serves the economic and geopolitical interests of regional and world powers, including the Gulf, Turkey and the US. Other countries, like Israel, Russia and Iran, have instead sought to disrupt the state building process and stoke sectarian tensions, because a stable Syrian government undermines their own interests. Last week, Israel bombed government buildings in Damascus and warned Syria’s president Ahmed al-Sharaa not to send his army into the southern city of Suweida, where ethnic violence between Druze and Bedouin families killed more than 1200 people. Despite claiming it was defending the Druze minority, Israel was accused by US envoy Tom Barrack of instead trying to fracture and divide Syria. Tune in to MEE LIVE every Tuesday and Thursday | 5pm UK | 12pm EST
