Supporters of British-Egyptian activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah gathered outside Downing Street on Thursday to show solidarity and call on the UK government to pressure Egypt for his release. Laila Soueif, Abd el-Fattah’s mother, announced on Wednesday that she is ending her intake of the 300 calories per day she has subsisted on since 28 February, having shifted to a partial hunger strike. Soueif has not eaten solid food since 29 September 2024 — the date her son’s five-year sentence was due to end — surviving only on herbal tea, black coffee, and rehydration salts. Abd el-Fattah was scheduled to be released on 29 September after serving five years for “spreading false news.” However, Egyptian authorities have refused to release him, claiming the two years he spent in pre-trial detention do not count towards his sentence.
