<description>At the centre of Israel’s latest wave of violence in Gaza is a new battlefield tactic: remotely controlled, explosive-packed vehicles. Rather than deploying troops, the Israeli military has been sending decommissioned armoured vehicles (APCs) into densely populated neighbourhoods and detonating them, wiping out entire blocks in some cases. Since mid-August, at least 100 of these “explosive robots” have been used, often carrying several tonnes of explosives. Rights groups warn this is happening at an “unprecedented pace,” with hundreds more vehicles set to be deployed. They believe the use of these machines serves a dual purpose: destruction and psychological warfare, to drive people out of the city as part of what they describe as Israel’s ongoing campaign of ethnic cleansing.
