Dr Ghada Karmi, Palestinian activist, academic, and writer, reflects on how, as Israel reaches its 77th year of existence, it is closer than ever to fulfilling its original objective: the removal of Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank. Karmi says what she sees unfolding is a final act of ethnic cleansing, carried out not by Israel alone, but with the “unstinting and uncritical support” of its western allies. She traces this complicity back to the Balfour Declaration in 1917, when Britain introduced Zionism into Palestine. At that time, Palestinians were a largely agrarian society with no role in Europe’s “Jewish question”. Zionism, she writes, was a foreign ideology imposed on a land unfamiliar with the history that produced it. Karmi argues that the West, in trying to resolve its own internal struggles, transferred the consequences onto Palestinians, turning them into obstacles to a larger enterprise they had no part in. She says the response to the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack made the West’s priorities clear: while Gaza was destroyed and the West Bank ransacked, western leaders rushed to defend Israel “as if they themselves had been attacked”. Meanwhile, mass starvation grips Gaza, and politicians continue to engage with a state under investigation for genocide. Karmi concludes that the message has always been clear: the issue was never truly about Palestinians, but about Europe’s unresolved relationship with its Jewish communities. In a world preoccupied with someone else’s story, Palestinians became visible only through their opposition to it, and once again, the world looks on, in silence.
