His party says that he will be sworn in as President of Venezuela on January 10 and that they will “fight from abroad” against President Maduro. It remains unclear if the opposition is planning to declare a “government in exile” from Madrid. Another possibility is that they seek a foreign military attack against Venezuela before January 10, to install Gonzalez then. Gonzalez’s vice presidential candidate, María Corina Machado, is seen as a much more radical figure within the opposition. With González out of the country, she’ll take the reigns within their movement. In 2019, she called for a US military attack to remove President Maduro. While Venezuela’s government has succeeded in ending the right-wing protests that followed the elections, the threat of further US intervention still looms large. Economic difficulties may worsen as the local currency faces devaluation.
