Egypt underwent its fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in January of this year focusing on the country’s human rights record. During the review earlier this year, UN member states raised concerns about various issues, including the treatment of human rights defenders, freedom of expression, torture, fair trial guarantees and capital punishment. Egypt's government was urged to implement recommendations made during the review, with a deadline for indicating its intention to support and implement these recommendations set for the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council from 16 June to 9 July 2025. The UPR is a process within the UN Human Rights Council where the human rights records of all UN member states are reviewed by other member states. This review happens periodically, with each country being reviewed approximately every 4.5 years. Egyptian jails hold an estimated 65,000 political prisoners, arrested for their opposition to el-Sisi’s government, according to a study released by the Arabic Network for Human Rights in March 2021.
