He said it’s vital that the courts can function freely and independently to implement international law and prevent impunity that provides a cover for war crimes. In September this year, the Trump administration sanctioned three prominent Palestinian human rights organisations operating in the occupied West Bank and Gaza. The sanctions targeted Al-Haq, Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights, and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR). The US tied the sanctions to the organisations for asking the ICC to investigate Israel over its genocide in Gaza. The sanctions will freeze any assets the organisations or people working in them have in the US, and will also bar them from transacting in US dollars. In addition, the sanctions could have a secondary impact by discouraging non-US entities from engaging with them. The Trump administration had also imposed sanctions on the ICC after it launched investigations and issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over war crimes in Gaza.
