That day in the Indian city of Amritsar, thousands of people gathered in Jallianwala Garden Square to welcome the new year when British colonial troops arrived, blocking the exits from the square and creating tension with the locals. Seeing the colonial troops besieging them in the garden on a festive day like New Year’s Eve, the Indian civilians began to protest and demand that the troops leave so they could celebrate the arrival of the new year in peace. In response to the protests, British General Reginald Dyer, without warning, ordered his troops to fire indiscriminately on civilians for ten minutes without pause. They fired a total of 1,650 rounds with all exits blocked. People fled in terror from the gunfire; dozens were crushed in stampedes, and at least 120 died after falling into water-filled wells surrounding the garden. It was one of the worst colonial massacres. British General Reginald Dyer, the perpetrator of the massacre, far from feeling remorse, boasted about it, saying: “Some Indians crawl on their backs before their gods. I wanted them to know that a Briton is as sacred as their Hindu god, and therefore they must crawl before him too.” As always, the entire massacre went unpunished.
