Michelle Berkon was forcibly removed from the vigil area by Australian police. She said she was threatened with arrest for speaking to the press, with police seen attempting to block her from giving interviews. She said her presence was about mourning her community members. Berkon said the tragedy had been politicised by Israel, pointing to Israeli flags prominently displayed throughout the event. She said the flag of Israel represents genocide and that its presence turned a space for grief into a political statement.
