In an interview on MEE Live, Somali-Irish refugee activist Ifrah Ahmad recounted the brutal realities faced by migrants smuggled through Libya. Ahmad spoke of women who became pregnant from rape, were severely beaten, and in some cases left to die. She described meeting a young woman held in a house for three months, forced into domestic and sexual servitude and abandoned when she became unwell. She also shared the grief of parents who lost sons and daughters to smuggling networks. Despite witnessing the horrors, rape, abuse, death, many migrants still say they would rather risk drowning at sea than remain in countries where they face unemployment, discrimination, or accusations of extremism. Ahmad noted that the saddest part is how people continue to risk everything, only to find they are still not welcomed when they reach Europe.
