It was on this day that Fidel Castro led the assault on the Moncada Barracks serving the US-backed Fulgencio Batista dictatorship. The attack, aimed at capturing weapons, backfired, and most of the revolutionaries were killed or arrested, including Castro. The symbolic and daring action gave birth to the guerrilla organization that later carried the date of the attack on the barracks as its name: Movimiento 26 de Julio (Movement of July 26) better known as M-26-7.
