The protests, which called for the federalisation of the country, came two days after a bomb attack inside a mosque in a predominantly Alawite area of Homs killed eight people. The protests reportedly spread to the cities of Tartous, Jableh, Latakia, Salhab, Masyaf, Draykish, Safita, Qardaha, the Alawite neighbourhoods of Homs, and surrounding areas.
