And for that, it was attacked. The Madleen sailed for Gaza. On board were not soldiers, but 12 unarmed civilians. It carried food and medicine, not weapons. In the dead of night, in international waters, Israeli warships encircled it, armed soldiers stormed its deck, and seized its passengers. Its mission was not an act of war, but an act of conscience: to deliver aid and solidarity to a starving people. On board was Greta Thunberg, who’s smeared as a "Hamas propagandist". A US senator sneered: "Hope Greta and her friends can swim." Israeli children were filmed in a grotesque chant: "We're coming to get you, Greta." This is not the voice of a democracy, Ghannoushi warns. This is a settler colony at the edge of its own delusion. But where, Ghannoushi asks, is the Arab world? The boat sailed from Italy, not Alexandria or Beirut. Egypt seals the Rafah crossing, guarding it with soldiers as Palestinians starve metres away. Palestine, it seems, is no longer the cause of governments. It is the cause of the free. Ghannoushi recalls the words of the Algerian revolutionary Larbi Ben M’Hidi: "Throw the revolution into the street, the people will pick it up." Today, she says, the revolution has been thrown into the sea. The only question is: will we follow?
