Global climate meeting COP26 is happening now in Glasgow, and the communities who are the most vulnerable to climate change are demanding action. While western leaders make more promises that they’ve broken before, people in the Global South, coastal communities, and poor people everywhere are already losing their homes and dying as a result of the crisis. Dipti Bhatnagar, climate justice & energy coordinator, Friends of the Earth Int'l, based in Justiça Ambiental (FoE Mozambique), discusses the conditions that the global south is grappling with from the climate change that the west is largely responsible for, and the dire necessity for real change. Steve Hedley, senior assistant general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers union (RMT), describes the protests that the progressive RMT union has been attending this week with renowned youth climate activist Greta Thunberg. Lylla Younes, environmental and data journalist with ProPublica & professor at The City University of New York's journalism school, outlines an important new investigation that she co-authored into U.S. air pollution, showing “sacrifice zones” where residents are dying from cancer-causing air. Will the Texas abortion ban be ruled unconstitutional? The Supreme Court heard arguments this week, and will hear another abortion case out of Mississippi on December 1. What will happen to women’s right to access abortion care? Jessica Mason Pieklo, senior vice president & executive editor at Rewire News, explains. This week is Free Mutulu Now Week of Action to demand the freedom of political prisoner Dr. Mutulu Shakur, imprisoned by the federal Bureau of Prisons for more than 35 years. Several political prisoners have recently been released, including Russell Maroon Shoatz and David Gilbert this year, and several MOVE members in the past few years. Jonathan Stith, organizer with Malcolm X Grassroots Movement DC & Free Mutulu Now Campaign, breaks down the situation. » Become a patron: https://www.patreon.com/BreakThroughNews» Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BTnewsroom » Tweet us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/BTnewsroom » Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/btnewsroom/ At Breakthrough News we believe in the power of independent media. Five mega-corporations dominate the media landscape — controlling 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. They control the news cycle, to which social media and even most “alternative” media is forced to respond. We are breaking through that cycle. We tell the untold stories of resistance from poor and working-class communities — because out of these stories we will construct a different narrative of the world, as it is and in real time. People’s movements in every corner of the globe are changing history and shifting consciousness. But these movements barely receive any coverage from the corporate media. They need visibility. They need amplification. They need a media arm to break through. We can be that media arm, but only with your help. Become a Patron and join us on the front lines in the battle of ideas.
