In a stark contrast, hundreds took to the streets of Mogadishu to protest the decision, which has been received as an effort to undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity. Somaliland has been pushing for international recognition since it declared independence from Somalia in 1991. It has its own money, passports and army, and is positioned on the Gulf of Aden. On Friday, Israel became the first country in the world to recognise Somaliland’s sovereignty.
