The 69-year-old launched her hunger strike on 29 September 2024, when the Egyptian authorities failed to honour Abd el-Fattah’s release date as he completed a five-year sentence for “spreading false news”. Soueif believes that her strike will ultimately succeed in securing her son’s release, but she’s doubtful she’ll live to see it.
