In an interview with MEE Live, Irish-Palestinian comedian, playwright, and actor Sami Abu Wardeh opened up about the power and purpose of comedy during times of immense political and human suffering. Known for his Channel 4 series The Sheikh and the critically acclaimed theatrical debut Bedu, Abua's latest work, Peace the Resistance, currently featured at the Shubbak Festival of Contemporary Arab Art in London, asks a provocative question: Can resistance be funny? Abu Wardeh says his journey into political comedy was not a choice, but a necessity. "Since the genocide started in Gaza, it became impossible to go on stage with a happy face. I couldn’t do it." He moved away from character clowning to stand-up, finding it a better vehicle to directly address the urgent political realities shaping the world. Rooted in both Palestinian and Irish histories of resistance, Abu Wardeh's personal experiences of displacement form the backbone of his creative work. His latest show blends physical comedy, storytelling, and unfiltered political commentary to create a communal space for grief, anger, and hope. “It’s about using the platform to amplify voices calling for real action.”
