In an interview with the BBC’s Amol Rajan, English sports broadcaster and former professional footballer Gary Lineker said the BBC must be “factual” in its coverage of Gaza, stressing that the full context of Israel’s war on the territory “starts way before 7 October.” Lineker, who is among 500 film, TV, and media professionals calling on the BBC to reinstate the documentary Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone, said the broadcaster should “100 percent” return the film to iPlayer. The BBC removed the documentary — which focuses on children in Gaza — from its streaming platform following mounting criticism over the inclusion of a child narrator who is the son of a Palestinian government minister in Gaza. Much of the backlash centred on the fact, first reported by researcher David Collier, that the 13-year-old narrator, Abdullah Alyazouri, is the son of Dr Ayman Alyazouri, Gaza’s deputy agriculture minister in the Hamas-run government. However, Middle East Eye reported on Thursday that Dr Alyazouri appears to be a technocrat with a scientific background, who previously worked for the United Arab Emirates government and studied at British universities.
