Footage circulating online since Saturday has shown dozens of bodies outside a morgue south of Tehran. An Iranian security official has also told Reuters on Tuesday that the death toll may be as high as 2,000 people, including security personnel. Protests spread across Iran in response to rising inflation on 28 December, but soon turned political, with some demonstrators calling for the end of the Islamic Republic.
