Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh claimed foreign intelligence services supplied weapons, cash and even drugs to fuel violence and destabilise Iran. He alleged joint coordination centres were set up to plan riots and support separatist groups. Nasirzadeh said bounties were offered for killings, arson and attacks on police, with detailed payment rates fixed for acts of destruction. Iranian officials insist the protests, which began as economic demonstrations in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar, were hijacked by foreign-backed saboteurs. Tehran warns there will be no leniency for those involved.
