<description>This lecture in commemoration of Islamic History Month-October 2025 in Canada is about the development of knowledge and science during the period of cultural efflorescence under the Abbasid Caliphate in the 9-11th centuries, a culture of learning that I call "Islamicate" because it was multi-religious and multi-ethnic in character under Muslim patronage. My focus will be an early text called Kitab adab al-tabib or The Conduct of the Physician that some consider to have formulated the first systematic understanding of medical ethics, including research ethics. This will give us a window into both the scientific, cultural, but also ethical environment of the diverse Islamicate society of the era that has many lessons for our own. 🎙️ New to streaming or looking to level up?
