On Friday, Denver Public Schools students walked out to protest the unjust closure of 13 schools across the city, primarily in working class neighborhoods of color. Since 2008, DPS has closed dozens of community schools in Black and Brown neighborhoods and opened dozens more charters, many of which have extremely harsh disciplinary policies and have been criticized for contributing to the school to prison pipeline, among other things. Over half of DPS schools are already charter or innovation schools. By closing more neighborhood schools, the DPS school board is making their agenda clear: their real bosses are billionaire “philanthropists” like Reed Hastings, Bill Gates, and the Walton family, not the Denver students and families they claim to serve.
