Soumaya Ghannoushi, a writer and expert in Middle East politics, says that the arrest of 83-year-old Reverend Sue Parfitt, along with more than 20 others, for peacefully holding placards in support of the recently proscribed group, Palestine Action, shows the extent to which dissent is now being criminalised in Britain. Their offence, she argues, was simply to oppose genocide. She criticises the UK’s decision to designate Palestine Action a terrorist group, noting that their tactics involve paint, chains and banners, with a goal to disrupt the flow of British-made weapons to Israel. Ghannoushi compares this with the suffragettes, who planted bombs, burned buildings and smashed windows. MPs who celebrate their legacy, she says, are now criminalising those who carry it forward. She concludes saying: “When Palestine is free, and it will be, we’ll remember those who stood for justice. And will remember who stood in its way.” British MPs have overwhelmingly voted to proscribe the direct action group Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation, which will make it a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison to be a member of or show support for Palestine Action.
