On The Freedom Side LIVE, Thursday, 2/29 at 3pm ET/12pm PT, Eugene and Rania are joined by special guests: Mike Prysner - Aaron Bushnell, an active-duty soldier with the US Air Force, set himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC on Sunday declaring that he would “no longer be complicit in genocide.” Mike Prysner, War veteran, Host of Eyes Left Podcast & producer for The Empire Files, discusses Bushnell’s sacrifice and the crucial role that soldiers and veterans have played historically in organizing against war. Layan Sima Fuleihan- Over 140 days into the US-Israeli genocide in Gaza, the total death toll since October 7 has increased to at least 29,782 Palestinians, with at least 70,043 injured. In addition to the incessant Israeli bombardment, Gaza is facing famine, its hospitals are besieged, and threats of a ground invasion in Rafah loom near. Layan Sima Fuleihan, the Education Director at The People’s Forum, an editor at 1804 Books, and an organizer with the Shut It Down For Palestine coalition, discusses the growing internal divisions and heightened political pressure on Israel and the United States, and the upcoming March 2nd Global Day of Action for Gaza. Brian Becker - Two years into the war in Ukraine, peace remains nowhere in sight. Tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians have died, and the US has funneled close to $80 billion into the proxy war. Despite Ukraine’s failed counter-offensive, significant military setbacks, a decrease in arms supplies, and declining public support from the US, neither Ukraine’s President Zelensky nor their Western allies have called for peace. How long will the US perpetuate this proxy war? Brian Becker, host of The Socialist Program on Breakthrough, discusses. Dalia Awwad- The Trinity of Fundamentals, a Palestinian novel by former Palestinian political prisoner, Wisam Rafeedie, has been translated and published in English for the first time by the Palestinian Youth Movement and 1804 Books. Written during Rafeedie’s imprisonment at Naqab Prison, the novel provides a fictionalized account of Rafeedie’s nine years of hiding from the Occupation in Palestine, which ended in his capture by the Israeli occupation army in 1991. Dalia Awwad, a member of the Palestinian Youth Movement, joins the show to discuss the lessons from the significant text that resonates deeply with our current political moment. Noelle Hanrahan - Supporters of Mumia Abu-Jamal are calling for urgent action for the world-renowned political prisoner, whose health is in serious decline as he continues to battle the state for his life. Mumia, who will turn 70 on April 24th, has been unjustly incarcerated for over 42 years, much of that time spent in solitary confinement on death row in Pennsylvania. Noelle Hanrahan, Founder and Director of Prison Radio, joins the show to discuss the call to action for Mumia and the ongoing international movement to free the revolutionary journalist and Black freedom fighter. #BreakThroughNews
