Adopted in March of 1944, it replaced The Internationale as the anthem of the Soviet Union. The original lyrics, present in this version, feature reference to the second leader of the Soviet Union and fourth classic of Marxism-Leninism, Iosif Stalin, to Stalin's protest. However, lyrics were altogether dropped from the song by the Khrushchevites in 1955 and when lyrics were returned to the song in 1977, any mention of great Stalin was removed.
