The forces alleged that by approaching the blockade, the flotilla was acting illegally, and posed a "direct security threat to Israel and it's citizens" as well as placing themselves in risk. Steering committee member Thiago Avila responded to the threats, asserting that the flotilla was a non-violent solidarity mission with the aim of breaking Israel's illegal 18-year siege on the strip, and opening a humanitarian corridor.
