This increased Israeli military presence came as US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack warned Lebanon of a return to confrontation with Israel should it fail to disarm Hezbollah. “The American warnings, which came from more than one source, indicate that we are heading for a confrontation,” says retired army general and military analyst Khaled Hamade. “Today, the state must ask itself how it can get out of this impasse.” Under a ceasefire that ended the war between Israel and Hezbollah last year, Israel must withdraw from Lebanese territory it still occupies and Hezbollah must hand over its weapons.
