Uefa recently unfurled a banner reading “Stop killing children, Stop killing civilians”, carried by refugee children including two from Palestine. The gesture came after the killing of Suleiman al-Obeid – a Palestinian footballer who scored over 100 goals and was hailed as Gaza’s rising star. Players like Mo Salah, Mohamed Aboutrika and Eric Cantona are finally speaking out. Stadiums around the world have seen fans hold ‘Red Cards’ demanding Israel be suspended from football over its war on Gaza. Yet Israeli players continue to compete internationally and no sanctions have been imposed. Fifa and Uefa cite political neutrality, despite acting quickly to suspend Russia over Ukraine and declining to protect those speaking out for Palestine. So why the double standard? And will football’s governing bodies ever hold Israel accountable – or continue to look the other way?
