Nakba survivor Antoine Raffoul and 93-year-old Jerusalem-born David MacInnes spoke to MEE in London on Saturday about why they joined protests marking two years of what they called genocide. Antoine Raffoul, a Palestinian architect born in Nazareth in 1941 - seven years before the Nakba in 1948 - has dedicated much of his life to preserving and restoring Palestinian culture and heritage. David MacInnes, a retired canon now aged 93, was born in Jerusalem, Palestine, in 1932. He was sent to the UK in 1944 to attend school during World War II, while his parents remained in Palestine and witnessed the events of 1948. His family’s roots in the region stretch back to 1846, a history he describes as “a long connection with the country.” Explaining why he joined the protest, MacInnes said he “hopes for the truth to be revealed” about the history of Palestine, adding that “Palestinians have been treated so unjustly.” Despite their age, the two men followed the entire route of the protest side by side through the streets of London - MacInnes going the whole way in his wheelchair.
